Shally's Game 2009 at The CIC 3* Bramham
Diana aged 6 years old.
Horses have always played a major role in my life, even before I could walk or talk I was sitting on my sisters horses! Taking the traditional route I went through the Pony Club doing my first One Day Event when I was 6 and representing my branch, The Suffolk Hunt, in team events from the age of 8.
I had a very successful Pony Club career, competing in numerous teams including the Gosling Cup which I won in 1999, the Hickstead Derby and Area 8 Dressage, Show Jumping and Horse Trials. I was in The Area 8 Horse Trials team 5 times and a highlight of my younger career was winning this twice and qualifying for the Pony Club Championships at Sansaw Park. This gave me a taste for jumping the bigger tracks, and soon after I affiliated to British Eventing.
I had an early taste of success in my Eventing career having been long listed for the Young Riders squad on my horse Portumna Rose, although sadly this was not meant to be as she went lame. Devastated, but undeterred I remained determined to reach my competitive goals. I was fortunate to be given the ride on Shallys Game, who is now successfully competing at advanced and 3* level, and Shallow Thatch, a brother and sister belonging to May Buckmaster who bred them from Shally, the pony she also owned and on which I did all the Pony Club teams. These two were the first young horses I had ever had and I produced them entirely myself. Shallow Thatch is now competing successfully at Intermediate, and Shally’s Game has now completed his first Advanced.
Eventing is the main thrust of my life and I am very fortunate to have excellent trainers, including John Bowen, Barrett Watson, Paul Hayler and Sue Broom.
Being part of the 2012 Pathway scheme gives me access to fanatastic training opportunities under the auspices of Olympic Trainer Yogi Breisner.
